PER COUNTY RULES, THIS POSITION IS ELIGIBLE FOR APPOINTMENT AT STEP 1, $37,876.80. COUNTY EMPLOYEES ARE SUBJECT TO THE COUNTY PROMOTION RULE FOR STEP PLACEMENT IN ACCORDANCE WITH COMP ORD 1.3.5.

Park Rangers are responsible for assisting members of the public when they visit County of San Diego parks, preserves, campgrounds, sports facilities and historic areas by providing administration, interpretation, safe facilities, park rules enforcement, and maintenance services. 

The working conditions of a Park Ranger may consist of working nights, weekends, and holiday shifts. Park Rangers may also be assigned to work in rural locations and may be exposed to extremes in temperature.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in parks and recreation management, natural resource management, cultural resource management, anthropology, history, biology, archeology, public administration, business administration, recreation administration, or closely related field; OR,

2. Sixty (60) semester units of college-level coursework from an accredited. U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency toward a four-year degree in one of the fields described above, AND, one (1) year of fulltime, paid experience in the operation, maintenance, and protection of a park, forest, natural recreational or historical area, or recreational programs; OR,

3. Two (2) years of fulltime, or equivalent, paid experience as described above. One (1) year fulltime, or equivalent, volunteer experience may substitute for a maximum of one (1) year of fulltime, or equivalency, paid experience; OR,

4. Two (2) years of fulltime experience as a Park Maintenance Worker with the County of San Diego.

NOTE: If qualifying under requirements 1 or 2, applicants must attach a copy of their unofficial or official transcripts, diplomas, and/or verification letters from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a foreign studies equivalency certificate during Step 1 of the online application process.

Desirable Qualifications:
 
  • Possesses previous experience and proven background with park operations in various settings, such as day parks, campgrounds, sports facilities, historic areas and open space preserves;
  • Drives to excel, self-starter;
  • Communicates effectively in verbal and written form;

  • Demonstrates ethical behavior, honesty, and trustworthiness;
  • Stays current with information and trends in the field of parks and recreation and displays willingness to share ideas with staff;

Evaluation Process:

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be required to take and pass a written exam in order to continue in the selection process. Invitations to take the written exam will be determined by the responses you provide on the supplemental application form using an automated evaluation system. If you are successful in the initial screening process and pass the exam, your application will be reviewed individually to confirm that the information you provided is accurate and qualifying. 

The written exam will take place on Saturday, December 7, 2013The written exam is multiple-choice and will include questions on: Customer Service/Interpersonal Relations, Written Communications/Business English, Cashiering and Cash Handling, Scenarios Involving Judgment and Decision Making, Basic Terminology Pertaining to Parks and Recreation, and Reading Comprehension. Invitations to take the written exam will be sent ten (10) days prior to the date of the written exam. Due to the high volume of applications expected, there will be NO make-ups or rescheduling of exams allowed. Please plan accordingly.

Qualified applicants will be placed on a twelve (12) month employment list based on scores received from the written exam (weighted 30%) and the evaluation of information contained on their employment and supplemental applications (weighted 70%).
